Is You Worth Watching?

You is a television show with a complex psychology and a complex history. It began as a Lifetime Original that was canceled after one season. However, it was given new life after its arrival on Netflix – so much so that the streaming service picked it up for renewal as a Netflix Original. It centers around psychotic stalker Joe Goldberg in his monumentally misguided search for love. He latches on to aspiring writer Guinevere Beck and seeks to make her his through manipulations of her, her friends, and her environment. Told though his eyes, it can be easy to get lost in Joe’s justifications for his reprehensible – and often homicidal – behaviors. Indeed, in several story arcs you find yourself rooting for him. Netflix currently has two seasons available (with a third on the way), and I must say that, as good as the first season is, the second season is an exponential improvement. The story, the characters, and the twists of the second season are as gripping as any I’ve seen. And as thrilling as it is to watch, it is also genuinely unsettling to consider the real-world implications of such a charmingly malevolent figure as Joe Goldberg.

Rating: A – Binge-worthy, entertaining, and unsettling all at once.
