Is The Gentlemen Worth Watching?
Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen is reminiscent of his prior work on Snatch. While not as good as Snatch, the Gentlemen is still very good. The bulk of the movie is told as a story within a story that has a somewhat unreliable narrator, which is used quite well for both comedic and dramatic purposes. The cast is quite expansive and diverse, and everyone plays their characters perfectly. It was great seeing Golding in a roll I had not seen him play before, but the standouts for me were Charlie Hunnam and Colin Farrell. Both actors played their roles to perfection, and I found them to be the most humorous. The story itself is told perfectly, leaving the viewer trying to guess the outcome of all of the threads that permeate the movie. The only part of the movie I thought was a bit weak was how wantonly mayhem ensued publicly around London without any police presence or response. I don’t think it hurts the overall movie, but it did leave me wondering where the Bobbies were. Although early in 2020, I think this will end up being one of my favorite movies of the year.
