Is Velvet Buzzsaw Worth Watching?

A thriller set in the world of modern art critics, Velvet Buzzsaw is as creepy as it is confusing. When the neighbor of an art agent dies, she discovers his apartment is full of his artwork. Sensing an opportunity, she steals it and her company begins to sell it. It quickly takes the world by storm, being sold to several collectors and galleries. However, the art turns out to be cursed, inflicting terrible deaths on those who profit from it, going to far as to have a painting of monkeys pull a grown man into the canvas, and hanging another from his necktie. Jake Gyllenhaal eventually becomes wise to the murderous paintings, while simultaneously going mad. There are also several subplots about politicking and subterfuge in the art world that seem out of place in the horror movie. After nothing supernatural for the first 40 minutes, I found myself losing interest; a feeling I returned to at the end as the murders got more and more bizarre. John Malkovich proved to be the most entertaining character and is only on screen for about five minutes. In the end, this movie is a tangled mess of unclear rules and missed opportunities.
