Is The Lovebirds Worth Watching?
The Lovebirds is a romantic comedy about a couple who gets entangled in a murder mystery immediately after breaking up. Starring Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae, the movie follows the pair on a macabre scavenger hunt across New Orleans after their car is used to kill someone. They leap from clue to clue trying to clear their names without help, convinced that two people of color would not be treated fairly by law enforcement. On their night-long adventure, they encounter a gang of frat guys, a grease-wielding senator’s wife, and a sex cult; and they even learn to value of their relationship. For the most part, I enjoyed this movie. There were certainly points where it was nonsensical or over-the-top, but that’s to be expected in most movies that follow this formula (like Game Night or Date Night). There’s nothing inherently new or special about it, but it’s easy watching as a date movie. Kumail and Issa are both very funny throughout – right form their opening fight – and their comedy ends up being the main draw for the movie.
Rating: B – Fans of the rom-com genre will enjoy it.
