Is The Conjuring Worth Watching?

The Conjuring was the launching point for a shared universe of interconnected horror movies. Featuring real life figures Ed and Lorraine Warren, the movie follows the investigation of a haunting in Rhode Island in the 1970s. After a family moves into an old house, they begin hearing noises with no origin and seeing ghosts. Once the Warrens become involved, it is revealed that the house was originally the home of a witch who sacrificed her baby to the devil then swore vengeance on all those who live on her land. The ghost of the witch possesses mothers and forces them to kill their children. The entire tale is based on a documented haunting in Rhode Island. The Conjuring series began at the same time as – and shares a director with – the Insidious franchise. In many ways they feel very similar. The Conjuring is filled with jump-scares but doesn’t do much to establish an atmosphere of lasting dread. In the end, it’s a fairly run of the mill ghost story. It will engage you and it will certainly make you jump in your seat, but it doesn’t break any new ground.
