Is Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Worth Watching?
I have conflicted feelings after watching The Rise of Skywalker. There are some undeniably cool moments and I enjoyed Kylo Ren’s story arc. However, this film is a companion piece to only The Force Awakens. Abrams has decided to minimize, discard, or retcon most elements from The Last Jedi that did not fit his original narrative. Because of this, the opening scrawl for The Rise of Skywalker introduces the sequels’ true villain, who comes from left field if you have only watched the previous two movies. This reveal also aligns with my biggest complaint of the movie, which is that to many decisions seemed to be made purely for fan service reasons. Some of these choices do not make sense in context with the prior two movies. However, the story beats worked and this still has all of the trappings of a Star Wars film. Throughout the sequels I have really enjoyed the dynamic between Rey and Kylo Ren, and for the most part, I enjoyed how this relationship played out in. If you have watched the prior two films, you owe it to yourself to finish the sequels trilogy, even though I think it is the weakest of the three.
