Is Cats Worth Watching?
Cats is by far the worst movie I viewed from 2019. It truly has a horrible art direction and lackluster CG. The anthropomorphic cat design is disturbing. Close-ups are clearly CG, but from a distance they look like they are wearing body suits. Further, the scale of the characters in their environment was totally off. Mice and cockroaches are minuscule compared to the cats, whereas a mousetrap is half their size and a loaf of bread is smaller than the mousetrap. However, what is worse is the horribly shaky camera. It seems like they filmed by hand without any stable-image technique, which caused a literal headache while watching. The music itself is sung well and the dancing is fine, but ultimately Cats is just boring. The story meanders, and while there are a plethora of songs, each song only serves to introduce a new cat who is never developed beyond that song. With all of the negativity surrounding the movie, I went into it expecting a fun bad movie. Unfortunately, there were no real redeeming qualities. If you are fan of the musical, you are better off watching the musical itself or listening to the soundtrack.
