Is Space Force Worth Watching?

Space Force is the Netflix show created in reaction to the creation of the new real-life military branch. It chronicles the trials and hi-jinks of a space department treated as a joke. Steve Carell plays a newly appointed 5-star general whose dream is to command a service branch. Unfortunately, he’s given command of Space Force. With his lead scientist (played by the very funny John Malkovich) and his social media guru (played by Ben Schwartz who is essential reprising his role as Jean Ralphio from Parks and Rec), he must find a way to put troops on the moon with an impossible deadline. Overall, the show is very funny. Steve Carell is playing just a dramatically different character from the bumbling Michael Scott. In this his humor is dry and situational rather than bullying. I feel like there are places where it fell flat, but they’re fewer and further between than I was afraid they’d be. Ultimately, the show is held up by Malkovich and the aspiring astronaut played by Tawny Newsome. Anytime these characters were on screen, I was the most onboard. I would recommend this show, though if you’re not hooked by episode 2, you can probably abort mission.

Rating: B – Funny in most places
