Is Secret in Their Eyes Worth Watching?

The Secret in Their Eyes is a murder mystery starring Julia Roberts, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and and Nicole Kidman. After Julia Roberts’s daughter is murdered – and the suspect is an informant for a terrorist cell – the agents involved try to navigate the priorities of the response. This movie is well acted by all parties; however, the writing just couldn’t keep up. There are enormous plot holes and absolute nonsense strung though the story. Even the characters seem to understand how crazy they’re acting as one of them points out “I really respect how you’re not even pretending to do this right.” The federal agents overstep their jurisdiction constantly, break into a suspect’s house, steal evidence, and assault witnesses. Keep in mind that they’re not trying to cover up a crime but solve one. Even if they managed it, the case would be thrown out almost immediately. Shoehorn in a romance plot for good measure and the movie is complete. It was tough to watch so many characters behave so foolishly. Finally, the end leaves you feeling drained and devoid of any satisfaction. What was supposed to be cathartic just comes off as cynical and depressing.
