Is Parasite Worth Watching?
Parasite is great and definitely deserved the Best Picture Award at this year’s Oscars. Parasite tells a completely original story, commenting on the disparity between the rich and the poor in South Korea. The movie likely resonated so well with audiences because the blight of major income inequality is not unique to South Korea. However, the movie does not preach this message and follows the old adage of “show don’t tell.” To accomplish this, none of the characters are clearly good or bad. The main characters, a poor family who slowly worm their way into all becoming employees of a wealthy family, are not particularly likable. They all acted deplorably, from getting others fired for their own gain to murder, which made them extremely difficult to root for. For most of the movie I felt relatively bad for the naïve rich family, until actions occur which do show they are no saints either. Joon-ho expertly mixes humor, horror, and drama to tell the story of each of these diametrically opposed families. I highly recommend this movie, but avoid spoilers at all cost.
