Is Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Worth Watching?

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood intertwines the daily lives of three actors from classic Hollywood. Everything comes to a satisfying head in the last minutes, but the build-up to the ending is slow. If you do not enjoy any given character’s particular story, the movie drags. I really enjoyed Pitt’s storyline and was pleased that he won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. DeCaprio’s story of a fading star, while interesting, introspective, and well-acted, did not keep me as engaged. Robbie’s story was the most superfluous and could have been trimmed down to focus on her relation to the Manson family. Further, the historical fiction this delved into left me uncomfortable. I absolutely loved the last twenty minutes of the film when all of the threads Tarantino weaves lead to a clashing of worlds and an outcome I was not expecting. But the historical changes chosen gave me vibes of Mark Wahlberg saying he would have stopped 911. Regardless, if you do not enjoy a slower paced movie, the payoff at the end may not justify the viewing. However, I thought the ending was so well done, it covered for other defects in the movie.
