Is the Irishman Worth Watching?

The Irishman is nominated for 9 Oscars for a reason - it is extremely well acted and tells an interesting story. Any movie with a run time of over 2.5 hours usually is an uphill battle for me to watch, but surprisingly, The Irishman kept me engaged the entire time. My biggest complaint is that it feels like more of the same from Scorses, De Niro, and Pesci, and I definitely enjoyed watching this less than either The Goodfellas or Casino. Further, the de-aging of the actors works to a certain level, but I was not convinced at all of De Niro playing a twenty something year old. At best, he looked in his forties. Regardless, the acting in this was top notch, and I was thoroughly impressed with Pecino’s portrayal of Jimmy Hoffa and think he has a much stronger claim for an Oscar as Supporting Actor than Pesci. This movie definitely feels like a throwback to Scorse’s early mobster movies, and if you enjoyed those, you will most likely enjoy this. Do not let the run time scare you away as it did for me for so many months.
