Is Harley Quinn Season 1 Worth Watching?
After watching the first episode of the DC Universe exclusive animated series Harley Quinn, I thought the show was excessively violent and vulgar. However, the shock humor was toned down a bit as the series went on and underneath was a cartoon with a surprisingly good character arch for Harley Quinn that was just as much about friendship, overcoming abusive relationships, and believing in ones self as it was about super villainy. Harley Quinn begins with the idea that Harley Quinn is done with the Joker and, in an attempt to show the world she is over him, she is constantly taking on heists to get into the legion of Doom. However, this is just the backdrop and what makes Harley Quinn so good is the characters. Harley’s crew consists of King Shark, Clayface, Doctor Psycho, Sy Borgman, and Poison Ivy. These characters are more goofy than menacing (especially Clayface) but still capable of extreme violence, which the writers of the show use to great effect. The show reminds me of a Venture Brothers-like take on the villains of the Batman universe and it works so well. This is a must see for any DC fan.
