Is Ford v Ferrari Worth Watching?

Ford v. Ferrari follows the true story of Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and Ken Miles (Christian Bale) on their mission to create the Ford GT40 with the intention of beating the Ferrari Racing team in the 24 Hours Le Mans race. While I enjoyed Damon’s performance, Bale was the real standout. His performance as Miles evocated a passionate and zealous racer who stood in stark contrast to the stuffy Ford Motor Company. Bale gives the kind of performance that shows how dedicated, and a bit crazy, Miles would have to be to drive a car over 200 mph into a sharp turn. The movie does a great job of showing the genesis of Ford’s desire to create the GT40, from the feeling that their cars were not attractive to a younger audience to Enzo Ferrari personally insulting Henry Ford II. My one complaint about this retrospective is that it is too long. Clocking in at over 2½ hours, I definitely think that the movie could have benefited from some fat trimming. However, this movie is still quite a compelling watch even for those uninitiated, which I count myself amongst, with cars and the car-racing scene.
