Is Finders Keepers Worth Watching?
Finders Keepers sells itself as a documentary about the stranger than fiction story of a man, Shannon Whisnant, who finds a mummified foot in a grill bought at a storage locker auction. From there, the story devolves into a years-long battle between Whisnant and the foot’s owner, John Wood, over who should own the foot. Finders Keepers delves deeper into both Whisnant’s and Wood’s lives, and the documentary is really about their pasts, and it offers a peak into the minds and lives of men who both have an odd obsession with a foot. Whisnant’s obsession stems from a need for attention due to his harsh upbringing, and Wood’s stems from drug addiction and guilt for the death of his father. The filmmakers took what could have made Whisnant and Wood into caricatures but instead showed the story behind the foot and portrayed the two men in a sympathetic manner, even if Whisnant’s behavior towards Wood is egregious. This documentary is well done, and it did not seem like the film makers were pushing an agenda while portraying this fight over the foot, which I appreciated.
