Dolomite Is My Name (“DIMN”) is a biographical look at the rise of 70s comedian and actor Rudy Ray Moore. One of the strengths of this movie is that the constantly moving storyline prevents any bordeom. The first part of the movie follows Moore as he tries crafts his popular persona Dolemite and travels throughout the country promoting his brand of comedy. Not satisfied, Moore then funds his own movie so that he can become a movie star and fight to get his movie into theatres. DIMN is the ultimate tale of a man who had to grind every step of his way to success. I had not heard any buzz about this movie before watching it and I was blown away by how much I liked it. Eddie Murphy’s performance as Rudy Ray Moore is the best role I have ever seen from him. DIMN was snubbed by the Oscars this year, getting zero nominations. At the very least, Eddie Murphy should have been nominated for best actor. DIMN is hands down better than the other Netflix originals nominated (Marriage Story and The Irishman). It is a must watch movie and one of my personal favorites of 2019.
