Is Birds of Prey Worth Watching?
Birds of Prey is surprisingly good. I have been pretty tepid on supporting the DC Extended Cinematic Universe since the blunderingly bad Man of Steele, but the DCECU has slowly been rehabilitating its image with better quality movies like Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Shazam. However, the current DCU had yet to capitalize on the popularity of Batman and his surrounding cast (excluding the Joker from this list as he is not part of the DCECU), but Birds of Prey does just that. It is a legitimately fun DCU Batman-verse movie to watch. I generally am not a fan of Margot Robbie, but she plays a good Harley Quinn. After the humor in suicide squad was more miss than hit, I was pleasantly surprised that I found most of Birds of Prey funny. They lean into the absurdity that is Gotham City run amok with gangs and super villains, and they are better for it. I don’t think this movie would work trying to be grim dark. The comedy in this flows naturally and extends from the strength of the cast instead of feeling forced. While Birds of Prey is not revelatory, fans of the genre will find something to enjoy.
