Is Bridgerton Worth Watching?
Bridgerton is a period drama about competitive marriage, gossip, and sex – somehow both too much and not enough. There are a lot of elements to enjoy in Bridgerton, however the writing and characters are not among them. The set and costume design are exquisite, but that does not make a show compelling. The show mainly follows Daphne Bridgerton and Duke Hastings as they pretend to be in love to placate their parents and society in general, and – gasp – fall in love for real. They’re surrounded by an overwhelming number of fairly boring secondary characters and plot lines. And all of it is narrated and overseen by the seemingly omniscient voice of Julie Andrews who writes a gossip column about all the nobles, stirring up trouble. The show has a way of sucking you in, though when you’ve finished you’re upset you’d wasted the time. It’s rare I encounter a show that intentionally makes its two romantic leads completely unlikable until so late in the show. The only true standout performance was by Adjoa Andoh who plays Lady Danbury so well it was as if she had been plucked from a different show altogether.
Rating F – Tawdry and dull, decorated to look fancy
