Is Sonic the Hedgehog Worth Watching?
Is Sonic the Hegehog Worth Watching? We at Gambots Network were split as to what to rate this so check out our two competing reviews below.
Review 1:
When the first Sonic trailer was released, it was almost universally dunked on for Sonic’s design. To Sega’s credit, they reworked all of the animation relating to the titular character. Instead of a more realistic approach, this Sonic is much closer in design to his video game and cartoon adaptations. Sonic is better for that choice and, overall, is not a bad movie. However, viewers should be aware that it is geared towards children. The plot is relatable; Sonic has been living alone and the years of solitude have made him crave a family. He eventually meets up with James Marsden, and the two have a buddy road trip to San Francisco culminating in the relationship that Sonic craved. The journey has some legitimately funny moments; I enjoyed Jim Carrey’s take on the egomaniacal Dr. Robotnik, especially as we see the Dr. becoming more unhinged as his plans fail. However, I was very aware I was watching Jim Carrey, so if you do not like his brand of humor, he could get annoying. If you are a Sonic fan or a child there is enough here to keep you interested, otherwise this is a generic kids movie.
Rating: C- Ok
Review 2:
Sonic the Hedgehog had so much going against it. It was seemingly a movie no one wanted. Then when the trailer dropped, his disgustingly human face caused such a backlash that they had to re-edit the movie to make him less horrifying to behold. Yet, even with all this holding it back, Sonic managed to be a delight to watch. Make no mistake going into this: it is definitely a kids’ movie. It’s silly and nonsensical in all the ways kids movies are. However it’s also very fun and high energy (and speed). Ben Schwartz voices the hedgehog to perfection, walking that thin line between energetic and irritating masterfully. Jim Carrey is a little too much at times, but it’s an evil I’m willing to tolerate. The plot is convoluted and surprisingly dark at times, but the light-hearted energy of the movie masks it well for the youngest audiences. I left the theatre genuinely shocked at how much I enjoyed myself. Also, be sure you’re on the lookout for easter eggs from the game series including familiar music, movements, and well-timed ring drops.
Rating: B - Silly but fun
