Is Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Worth Watching?

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist is a musical drama about a woman who – after a freak MRI accident – can suddenly hear people’s innermost emotions expressed as choreographed renditions of hit songs. It sounds silly on its face, and honestly it is. However, it still manages to draw you in with extremely likable characters and compelling plots. We follow Jane Levy’s Zoey as she struggles with her career, her love life, and her dying father. This last one becomes the driving force for nearly all the emotionality in the series. Zoey’s father, played wonderfully by Peter Gallagher, has a degenerative neurological disorder that has left him unable to move or communicate. With her new-found powers, though, Zoey can now reestablish a connection with him. Otherwise, the show is a standard problem-of-the-week format where she hears someone sing a song and had to figure out a way to help them with what they’re going through. While some performances are cringe-worthy (Lauren Graham singing Ke$ha, for example) most are fairly well done. And a musical cameo from Renee Elise Goldsberry is always welcome in my book. Overall, this show was pretty solid. It has laughs, it has drama, and it has genuine tear-jerking.

Rating: B – Silly but enjoyable
