Is Over the Garden Wall Worth Watching?

Over the Garden Wall follows the story of two brothers who are lost in the woods, attempting to find their way home. Along the way, they meet the denizens of the woods while trying to evade the sinisterly named “The Beast”. The animation itself is a weird but amazing amalgamation of the artwork from shows like “Adventure Time” mixed with Americana, which on paper sounds like it should not work but in practice creates one of the most unique visual experiences I have ever watched. The music is also heavily Americana influenced which fits this animation perfectly. Further, the writing for this show is fantastic. While the series is episodic in nature, there is an overarching thread. The creators make the most of their ten episodes, clearly executing the story they wanted to tell. Every episode builds to the finale in some way, even if it is just through character development. The fact that they are able to develop fully fleshed out characters in ten episodes is a feat in and of itself. Further, the creators subvert the viewers expectations with every episode, and, sometimes amazingly, sometimes subvert them again, which always left me enthralled by the episodes.

Rating: S- This is one of the best animated shows I have ever watched and strongly recommend it to anyone of any age.
