Is Outer Banks Worth Watching

Outer Banks Banner.jpg

The new Netflix Original series Outer Banks tells the story of a group of high schoolers on a treasure hunt off the North Carolina coast. It’s a very basic teen drama about a group of friends going through things no group of high school friends have ever gone through. Four (and later five) friends pick up the trail of sunken gold in the aftermath of a hurricane. This chase leads them through dangers such as homicidal mercenaries, breaking and entering, three love triangles, and eventually murder. In a high stakes race to the finish, each episode of the show ups the ante until the final episodes bear little to no resemblance to the premiere. However, for all its unoriginality and increasing madness, Outer Banks still manages to bring you in and take you along for the ride. It’s TV junk food. Underdeveloped but still wildly enjoyable if you can suspend your disbelief a long way. With no big names, the show must rely on the likability of its characters. In that pursuit, it succeeds on almost every level. And as in any good teen drama, it ends on a cliffhanger that I’m very eager to see resolved.

Rating: B – Silly but still fun
