Is 30 Coins Worth Watching?
30 Coins follows the story of disgraced Catholic priest Father Vergara as he tries to protect one of the 30 coins paid to Judas to betray Jesus from an extremist group within the Catholic church. However, this group uses black magic to retrieve this coin which unleashes various monsters on the town in which Vergara is stationed. I decided to watch this because I thought it was a horror show, and the first episode delivered; this show is best when it leans into the horror elements. However, in the following episodes, the focus is instead on the human drama and the quarrels within the Catholic church. This storyline was not well paced and definitely dragged at times. The other leads also hurt the show. Paco and Elena, the Mayor and local veterinarian, respectively, are not particularly likable and are involved in a love square throughout most of the episodes that felt very forced. What I had hoped would be a horror show turned into a weird hybrid horror/ mystery/ soap opera with a heavy emphasis on the drama, which was disappointing.
Rating: C- While parts of the show are great, overall the story is poorly paced and not all that well written which contains too much melodrama
